Our Future Leaders

OB: You guys are in the running for Vans Warped Tour 2009, have your fans been casting their votes?

Brian:    Yes, we’ve actually been seeing a great amount of support for this competition surprisingly.  We’ve been promoting it all over on myspace, facebook, and reverbnation.  You can vote here at:

OB: How’s the search for a new drummer been going?

Brian:    Not great. Most of the drummers we’ve come across are shady or just not very good, as you can imagine.  One day you get a call saying they want to audition and everything sounds great, I call to confirm the date and what do you know..their phone is disconnected and they’re not responding to your email…thus the search continues. We’ve been through this before and it’s not an easy task finding someone for this band that can play all the different styles and also fits our requirements.  Unfortunately finding professional musicians is a rare thing, cherish them!

OB: Our Future Leaders has a very raw sound. How have you guys tweaked your style to how it is now?

Brian:    Well Danny and I have been working together in this band for a few years now and we’ve really gotten a feel for each other in how we like things to sound and where we want to go with the music.  My goal for this band has always been to play different genres because I listen to so much different stuff from George Clinton to Iron Maiden, and I never really saw too many bands take that on to much extent so this is the direction we’re at.

OB: Playing off one another on guitars can be tricky, how do you guys collaborate with one another?

Danny:  We have been playing guitar together for a while now, so for live shows we can kind of feel where the music is going if we’re just jammin during a set. As far as sitting down and writing music, someone usually comes up with a riff that we can agree sounds good. From there we each come up with some ideas around the main riff (or fit in some older riffs we have come up with) and then tweak these ideas to sound better and scrap the ones that don’t really fit the mold.

Brian:  It’s also kind of strange that we tend to write riffs or music on our own, then find out it really fits in the same key and feel as something the other writes which works out great.

OB: What are some of the methods you guys are using to gain more fans?

Brian:    So far we’re limited to certain things as funding is tight.  At shows we’re always giving away free CD’s to whoever will take them.  I’m also online a few hours a day on networks such as Myspace, Facebook, Reverbnation, and a number of other sites just to have our name and music up as many places as possible. Reverbnation is a great tool for musicians because of how well it tracks literally everything from song plays to fans as well as managing your fan mail so I’m on there a lot.  It’s important to keep updating the pages through bulletins, those little blogs, pictures, new music, shows, whatever new stuff is going on.  There’s only so much you can do online, however we are looking to invest in a little online promotion here soon to help us out.

OB: What changes would you like to see in the Orlando music scene?

Brian:    Promoters who call themselves promoters should actually, you know….promote their shows, not just book them.  This is something I’ve talked about with a couple of friends from other local bands here that seems to happen often.  They’re coming off as promoters that expect you to bring a minimum of people and then when only your people show up(however many that is) they’re upset with you that the turnout was bad.  I want to see more of the promoters doing their share of bringing people to the events whether if its with drink specials, cheaper tickets, or just friends of theirs.  Support for local music here is tough, and we need all the help we can get.

OB: What’s in store for Our Future Leaders for the rest of 2009?

Brian:    Hopefully we can become 100% again within the next month or so, that way we can start booking again.  We have been writing a bunch of new songs lately a few of which we’ve only played live once or twice, so we’re really excited about playing those. We’re working on getting some new merch soon, stickers and a much sexier looking CD with some of the new tracks on it, so look out for that.

OB: Before cars were invented, would crying baby’s “ride you crazy”? As opposed to “drive you crazy”?

Brian:  I don’t think baby’s should be driving in the first place, much less riding….they just didn’t have the regulations back then.

OB: Are there any new recording projects happening or planned for the future?

Brian:  Yes, we’re actually getting some new recording equipment in the next few months, after which we will start working on our first album “Suits & Squirrels”.  We’ve already started tracking for 2 songs “Obtain” and our new song “Enemy” so we’re very excited about this!

OB: Where can we find the music!?
